Mystic River Herring Video Count Project

Apr 1, 2017

Prepared for Mystic River Watershed Association by Jeffrey D. Walker, PhD

Summary: Developed a web-based system for storing underwater videos recorded at fish ladders on the Mystic River. The videos are stored in the cloud and made available to the general public to assist in annual counts of river herring migration. Each user is asked to watch one or more short videos and to count the number of fish that pass through the dam. The website also includes a series of data visualization stories that provide insights into the fish count data, and to help educate users about various patterns in river herring migration. Project funded through a US EPA Environmental Education Grant.
